College credits may be earned through three programs provided by the district.

(AP)

PROGRAM

AP courses are college-level courses taken by high school students.

Students may receive college credit by passing a national exam.

Students who take specific career & technology courses for high school credit may be eligible for college credit at many community & technical colleges in Texas .

Juniors or seniors may earn high school elective & college credit at the same time when enrolled in a dual credit course.

Students must take an AP exam to receive college credit.

College and universities set their own standards for awarding credit. Over 90% of U.S. colleges and universities as well as those in 20 other countries give credit for AP exams.

College credit is awarded after the student graduates from high school and enrolls at the participating college.

College enrollment must occur within 15 months of high school graduation.

College credit is posted to the student's college transcript upon successful completion of the course.

High school credit is posted to the student's high school transcript upon successful completion of the course.

AP courses are taught by high school teachers who receive College Board training.

Courses are taught by high school teachers qualified to teach at the college level.

The course may be taught on the college campus by a college instructor.

The course may be taught on a high school campus by a college instructor

The course may be taught on a high school campus by a regular high school teacher.
(Note: dual enrollment in this arrangement is optional. The course may be taken for high school credit only.)

Grades for AP courses are given by the teacher.

AP courses are Bonus Points Courses, students receive additional points toward their GPA.

Grades are awarded by the high school teacher.

The student must earn an 80 or greater in the articulated course to be eligible to receive the college credit.

The student is taught and graded in the same way as college students who take the same course.

AP courses are open to students in grades 10-12 who are in good academic standing and have met the criteria for selection.

Junior or senior students are eligible for college credit in each articulated course completed.

Freshman and sophomore students must complete an approved sequence of courses to earn the articulated credit.

Students must meet specific college and Abilene ISD criteria for enrollment in dual credit courses.

AP courses are free.

Students pay a portion of the $80 AP exam fee. Currently, the Texas Education Agency pays $30 for each examination taken by eligible students.

The SOAR program pays $25 for each exam and reimburses the students $25 if they score a 3 or higher on the exam.

Additional discounts are available for eligible students with financial need

Articulated courses are tuition free
